Product Details
This COAL BUST OF MINER #2 FIGURINE was handcrafted in Wales. It measures 3.25" high x 3" wide. Comes with a story card. It is widely believed that Wales was settled by the Celts in 500-100 B.C. A small country of mountains and green valleys, it became known as the center of the early coal mining industry. Drift mines used since the 1700s were replaced with shaft mines. By 1850, the South Wales coal fields were some of the most important in the world. Towns grew up around the coal pits as people abandoned rural occupations for the higher wages offered by mine owners. Some Welsh miners emigrated to the U.S. to start Welsh communities in OH, PA, TN, CO and UT. By the 1920s, coal had become less significant as a Welsh national industry. In the late 1970s, only 2 out of 5 workers were still employed in coal-related positions. Today most of the mines are closed. The coal still extracted is being used to create small pieces of history in the form of figurines like this one.
