Laurel Burch's creativity launched a merchandising empire. Diagnosed at age 7 with a bone disease called osteopetrosis, she left her home in southern California at the age of 14 and made her way to the San Francisco area. She died in September, 2007 having become an entirely self-taught icon of American folk art.
Laurel Burch once said that her reaction to her illness was to create a place inside herself that was beautiful, safe, colorful and happy. There she invented the images that became her bridges to people. As she put it, "I just wanted to pass on the joy of what I saw."
Ms. Burch continued to paint and design in the last year of her life, even when in a wheel chair. She worked almost daily and started on a book about her jewelry business. We at The Best of Europe feel that her spirit will live on for a long, long time in the beautiful and spirited art she has left behind for us to enjoy. |
