This GIFTS OF THE MAGI ORNAMENT was handcrafted in Bethlehem from olive tree prunings. The ornament is on a gold chord hanger. Measures 3.75" in diameter. (Olive wood carving is a traditional art form that emerged during the time of the Crusades. Artists who came from Europe settled in Bethlehem and started the unique industry. Using simple hand tools, the practice of carving olive wood is maintained to preserve Biblical heritage for each generation. According to the Bible, Jesus prayed underneath an olive tree in the Garden of Gethsemane. The Bible often refers to the olive tree as a symbol of peace such as in the story of Noah's Ark. Through the centuries, the olive tree has become a symbol for the land of Israel itself. The tree is a subtropical, broad-leafed, evergreen tree which has edible fruit. It ranges from 3 to 8 meters or more and has many branches. Its leaves are leathery and lance-shaped. Dark green, the leaves are paired opposite each other on the twig. The trees are pruned each October and the prunings sold to craftsmen who create these pieces of art. Generally the wood is dried for 3-5 years to prevent cracking or splitting.
