Product Details
The Aztec descendants of the Ameyaltepec region of Mexico have been painting on paper and pottery for literally thousands of years. The art form is learned in a family setting with each family and artist eventually developing their own unique approach. Mesoamerica where these Nahua people live is the only area aside from the Andean region where states developed before Europeans arrived. Mesoamerica is an area of related, precolumbian cultures sharing social and cultural features such as forms of village organization and a shared calendar. The area once extended through central/south Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, western Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. From approximately 1530 B.C. they worked primarily on wooden masks, pottery and murals. Their art as a cultural practice has helped foster ethnic identity and pride. This one-of-a-kind decorative plate is 16" in diameter. It is handpainted on the front and glazed. Signed by Alejandro Cirenio de la Rosa (one of the most well-known of the current amate painters) on the back. (See his black/white amate work in "The Amate Tradition" by Jonathan D. Amith.) COLLECTOR'S PLATE. ONLY ONE EXISTS.
